About the
playbook
Blue Shield of California Foundation funds this playbook in recognition of the critical role journalists play in changing the conversation about domestic violence.
For over 20 years, the Foundation has invested millions of dollars toward our mission to make California the healthiest state and end domestic violence.
We believe that ending domestic violence requires changing the conversation about it. We want to create a world where people treat domestic violence as a health equity issue and a multigenerational cycle that can be prevented.
This resource reflects the input of dozens of working journalists, survivors of and people experiencing domestic violence, and advocates and practitioners in the fields of domestic violence, health equity, and journalism.
California Partnership to End Domestic Violence assembled the advisory group for the first edition and contributed much of the content. Daylight Design developed the website based on extensive research, synthesis, and human-centered design.
If this resource proves useful to you, or could be improved, please let us know.
This playbook is the product of a collaborative process with an advisory group of journalists, advocates, and domestic violence survivors. The journalists in the group each bring experience in reporting on domestic violence, sharing invaluable insights they've gathered along the way. Survivor voices are vital to ensuring the playbook reflects and respects the lived experience of those directly affected by domestic violence. The collaboration led to a resource focused on addressing the unique challenges journalists face, while being vetted by survivors for sensitivity and accuracy. The result is just the beginning of what we hope will become a comprehensive tool that supports journalists in covering domestic violence with skill and empathy.
We welcome suggestions to continually improve this resource.
