Sensitivity

Culture plays a role in the ways people describe, experience, and heal from domestic violence. Trauma can have a variety of lasting impacts on the brain, on the body, and across generations. Being sensitive to these and other nuances of domestic violence will improve your reporting and build trust with your sources and audiences.

In practice

Do your homework

Before working with a survivor of domestic violence, learn some basics about the impacts of trauma and the cultural contexts in which violence occurs. (This playbook is a great place to start.)

Be ready to adjust

It can be hard to remember when you’re on deadline, but putting survivors’ well-being first might mean changing your plans and usual reporting practices.

Use content warnings

In California alone, 58% of adults have been affected by domestic violence. That could mean more than half of your audience. Preface your story about domestic violence with a notice that the visuals, audio, or text might be disturbing.
